The “F” Word… No, not that one… FLOSS!

Do you dread being asked this question when you go to the dentist? Do you start flossing two weeks before your appointment to avoid this topic? Or is flossing just too time consuming to do? If you are anything like I used to be, you’ve answered yes to one of these questions.
I’ll let you in on a little secret… By flossing at least once a day, you can save yourself tons of time and money in the future!

No, your eyes did not deceive you. You can actually save yourself time by flossing everyday. Here’s the explanation. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is the most common disease worldwide. The worst part is that once it strikes, flossing one time a day is no longer enough. Frequently, people have to floss two to three times a day just to keep their gum disease from coming back! I don’t know about you, but I would rather floss once a day rather than three. So, by flossing everyday you can avoid the dreaded periodontal disease.

Flossing not only protects your gums, it also prevents cavities from forming between your teeth. If you don’t take the time to floss everyday you could end up with cavities and consequently fillings between your teeth! Unfortunately, it takes more flossing to keep a filling or crown clean than a healthy tooth. Just like maintenance for your car, there is required maintenance for your mouth. This means, the more dental work you have in your mouth, the more flossing you have to do just to maintain it. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like to save time and money.

I try to find creative ways to fit my daily flossing in without having to allot time just for that. If I am checking email, catching a 30 minute news reel, or watching the kids be cute, I try to fit in flossing. So really, you don’t have to set up a separate time to do this, just work it into the usual schedule!

Next time you come in for your checkup, you can get the gold star in the form of time AND money and not have to worry about those bleeding gums anymore! Afterall, your arm doesn’t bleed when you just touch it, does it?
